My Mid-wife Crisis

Help! I’m having a midwife crisis!

On one hand, I am a highly skilled professional who wants to help pregnant women to achieve the best possible birth experience and on the other hand, I am a midwife working in the UK. Controversial? You might think so, but this the reality of my working life. You see, I trained as a midwife over 3 years ago and spend most of my time having the privilege of bringing new life into the world. Unfortunately, my ability to help the mothers in my care is restricted by the pressures I face from working in an understaffed NHS hospital where my time and equipment/facilities are limited. Please do not misunderstand me- the care I and my colleagues provide is exceptional, safe and effective, but I want to do more than that.

I want to have the time to sit and talk to couples in length about the decisions I am asking them to make in regards to their birth. I want to educate and empower parents to have the confidence to say ‘No’ in the birthing room. I want women to prepare for their birth the way they would prepare to run a marathon. I want women to look forward to giving birth, not to fear or dread it.

This is where my new blog comes in.

Each week, I am intending to share my knowledge with you in a variety of articles about every aspect of pregnancy. If you enjoy reading, or find it helpful, please leave me a comment and let me know.

Love and Best Wishes,

The Positive Midwife
